Although born in Johannesburg, South Africa,
Derrick has spent
most of his life being brought
up and educated in
the Eastern Cape and Border area.
Gave various
schools the benefit of his presence.
Spent his school and army years cheering his
mates up by drawing silly pictures of his superiors.
(Sometimes to his own detriment.)
Attending P.E. Technikon and studied graphic
design when waves weren't up. Sadly, did not
complete his diploma and decided to try his hand
at retail management for 10 years. Finally landed
up as National Marketing manager for a retail
group before deciding to do things his own way
and go it alone.
Has freelanced since 1993 and spent 5 years
traveling annually to the UK to undertake
commissions and to do chalkboard art for various
pub groups. Derrick is well known locally for his
chalkboard art, displayed in Pubs, restaurants
and corporate canteens throughout the city.
Also did chalkboards nationally for a restaurant
group until it became too tiring.
Has illustrated countless corporate training
programs and motivational aids.
Derrick's cartoon portraits of people are widely
used by local and national business for awards or
celebrations of various sorts.
Derrick also does political cartoons for the East
Cape Herald as well as cartoons monthly for
Autonews and Wiel magazines as well as Goodyear
and General Motors magazines.
He is also used by the local design agencies
and
national publishers, from time to time,
to
illustrate.
Has been known to paint seriously for himself,
however, has also taken on commissions on occasion.
Conceptualised and illustrated the Gimme 5
Lifeskills and Aids awareness game.
Designed and produced window panels for the
Cricket World Cup, for Sahara St. Georges park
cricket ground.
Derrick has illustrated two books, with Barry
Hilton – soon to be published.
The power of the internet, allows Derrick to enjoy
a good standard of life in Port Elizabeth , whilst
undertaking commissions worldwide.
